Nicholas Erb: where in Alsace or Pfalz?
On December 29, 1760, Peter Bricker (born "Bruecker" or "Brucker", with an umlaut, or two little dots, above the letter "u") dictated his last will and testament in West Cocalico Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. In it he stated, "I give unto my beloved son David Bricker a piece of wood land containing 310 acres adjoining to the land of Nicholas Ensinger for the sum of 50 pounds..."
David Bricker (1755 - ?) was the husband of Mary Magdelena Erb (1764-1838), daughter of Jacob Erb and granddaughter of Nicolas Erb. The Brickers, like the Erbs, were Mennonites, arriving in America in 1732 on the ship "Pink Plaisance". Peter's father and mother originally came from the town of Frutigen in Switzerland's Bern Canton, but by some accounts left sometime after 1686 due to the prevailing climate of religious persecution against Mennonites in that time and place. In the years until Peter and family emigrated,
the family may have traveled and lived in Alsace and/or the Palatinate, and there's an unconfirmed tradition that Peter was born in 1700 either in the city of Zweibruecken, or somewhere in the surrounding Duchy of Zweibruecken.
In line with the saying that birds of a feather flock together, I wonder where the Erbs might have lived in between the time they
left Switzerland and the time they caught a ship for America? Does anyone know, and if so, where did they find the information?
Thanks for any assistance!
Dale Bricker
