J.A.M. Epting -- Mississippi --1880
In the 1880 U.S. census for Smith County, MS (the LDS CDs -- transcriptions of the census records), I found a J.A.M. Epting listed as living with the William Swittenberg family -- listed as a daughter, age 16, born in Mississippi, father and mother born in South Carolina.
I'm trying to figure out who J.A.M. Epting is.I know that some Eptings moved to Mississippi from South Carolina when the various other Dutch Fork families did, but I'm having trouble figuring out how J.A.M. Epting was a daughter of William Swittenberg.
William Swittenberg was married three times and had many children. His first wife was Elizabeth Harriet Summer, who died in 1848.Their children were Christiana Elizabeth, John Calvin, Albion Melanchton, James David, and Susannah Jane (my g-grandmother).William then married Emiline Swindler, while still living in SC.They moved to Mississippi, where they had three children:Mary E.M., William F., Nannie M.Emiline then died, and William married for a third time -- to another South Carolinian, Martha Susannah Gallagher. They had three children:Mattie L, L.L., R.R.
My big question is why J.A.M. Epting is listed as a daughter in the 1880 census. Her age puts her as a daughter of Emiline Swindler Swittenberg. Was she married at sixteen to an Epting? No other Eptings are listed as living with the Swittenberg family.
Thanks for any help.
