Dr. Richard Eppes, City Point's largest landholder, was well educated and received a medical degree from the Univ of Pennsylvania. He enlisted for fifteen months in Prince George Cavalry, and with his unit, was mustered into the Third Virginia Cavalry Regiment. He also purchased uniforms and equipment for twelve men in the Prince George Cavalry and four men serving Petersburg regiments. After mustering out, Eppes utilized his medical training as a contract civilian surgeon with Confederate hospitals in City Point and Petersburg.

Dr Eppes kept a diary during most of his life. I believe that it is located at the Virginia Historical Society.
