Hi Rose,
Eoff was originally Off, a German name with an umlaut over
the O. The immigrant ancestor and all known before him
spelled the name Off. Sometime in the early 1700's the
son of the immigrant was spelling the name Eoff; the reason
for this spelling change is unknown. The name was and is
pronounced "Oaf", in earlier times more like "Ove". Nearly
all Eoffs in the United States today pronounce the name
"Oaf", but there are a few families who now pronounce the
name E-Off, to match the spelling. The young man in
Oklahoma City is no doubt a descendant of the immigrant
"Off" ancestor.
