The most plausible explanation is the name denotes a former inhabitant of Insming, a village in Moselle, France. Most descendents of this line, which includes several variations, including Ensminger, Entsminger, and Entzminger, originated from Alsace, a region that, depending on the period of time, has been part of both France and Germany. It is now part of the Department of Bas-Rhin, France.
For more information, refer to the book Ensminger of Alsace and Pennsylvania by Dr. Raymond Bell. Dr. Bell did some 50 years of research and, with some later help from others, has identified the earliest two known "Ensmingers" as two men called Hans. One, Hans Gerber/Ensminger d. Dec 26, 1630 in Diemeringen, Alsace. The other, Hans Meyer der Einssminger d. Aug 29, 1621 in Bockenheim (At his death, his name was recorded as Hans Ensminger.) There appears to be no evidence that these two families were related.
