The Southern Ensleys seem to have come to NC by 1710 or so. They may have landed in VA first. Some later went to GA and AL. There is a lot of history on them on the internet. Also, you might search for keywords within this Ensley Forum, such as Enoch Ensley, Benjamin Ensley, Birmingham, etc.

I do not know if your husband is closely related to the Ensleys who founded the big steel mills in Ensley, AL, near Birmingham. But they are fellow Alabamians bearing the surname Ensley. I have tried to find a link from them to my Ensleys of NC, but haven't yet.

The name is found under many spellings, including Endsley, Indsley, Insley, etc. My research suggests it is a form of Ansley. Most Ansleys probably descend from the First Lord of Annesley, (Nottinghamshire, England), Richard de Britto.

When William the Conqueror of Normandy took over England in 1066, he awarded one of his noblemen, a knight named Richard de Britto, a large estate called Annesley. Descendants took the name Annesley, and later Ansley and sometimes Ensley, as their surname.

If you could tell me your husband's grandparents' names, I might be able to trace them back on the Census and see more about their origins. Or great-grandparents' names would be great too. If not available, even a great-uncle or great-aunt would help.

Meanwhile, below is a link to all my Ensley genealogy. Feel free to look it over. Please note that there are 2 1/2 pages, so be sure to click Next Page at the bottom:
