It is always good to have people's input on old census records, since so many errors were made. The 1800's were especially frustrating, as spellings and ages were seldom consistent from one decade to another.

Another problem in the 1800's was a strange tendency of people to go by their first name on one census, then switch to their middle name on the next, and perhaps a nickname or initials on the next.

If you find Paulina's surname it would be nice to know it.

PS: I just took a break, and looked for Paulina on the 1900 census, and could not find her. I looked for her on the 1910 and... well... do you believe in miracles? Because I finally found them in 1910 in Lake Co., IN, but Charles Fowdy is listed by his Hungarian spelling, Carol Fode (with an accent mark of some kind over the o in Fode). The first son, Charles, is also listed as Carol. Then son John, and next daughter Mary.

Living in the home with them are some boarders, most notably a John Kacurowsky, age 30. If he was Paulina's brother then that might explain why some people feel her surname was something like Kanowski or even Kaudesky.

Incidentally, there were nearly 7,000 Hungarians in that one county alone, in 1910.

I suppose one could find more on Charles' and Paulina's lineage by looking for ship passenger manifests. Since they say on the 1910 and 1920 that their first kids were born in NJ, they could have disembarked in Philadelpha or New York harbors, if not elsewhere close by.

I am emailing you the census image from 1910. Maybe you can figure out exactly what the spelling is, though it looks like Fode with an accent of some kind, rendering the o to more of an au sound as we know it, in Fowdy / Foudy, for example.

It is hard to read. In fact, Ancestry.com had transcribed it as Iode or some-such, and I only found them by looking for the name Paulina born in Hungary in the 1880's, living in Lake Co., IN, in 1910. Thanks to your tip on her name, I was then able to find them.
