Ensley kin in NC Epidemic of 1863

Does anyone know what the nature of the epidemic was, that ravaged parts of NC in May 1863? My great-great grandparents, John bailey Ensley and wife Cynthia Messer Ensley, lost 3 little daughters within three days! Mariah, Lovincy Magdalene, and Martha Jane. Bless their sweet little souls.
