Abner & Hannah Ensign are my 4th great grandparents. I am descended throughtheir son Samuel (1818-1885). From a family document handwritten by Samuel's daughter Emmaret Ensign (received from a distant cousin), I learned that Samuel was born to Abner & Hannah in Leister (now Leicester) in Livingston County, New York.
The 1830 US Federal Census for Leicester, New York shows an Abner Ensign living there with a total of 10 people in his household: one adult male (30-39), one adult female (30-39), 5 males under 20 years of age, and 3 females under 20 years of age. The 1840 US Federal Census for Leicester, New York lists a Hannah Ensign as head of a household with 5 total people in it: one adult female (40-49), one female between 15 & 19, one male in his 20s, one teenage male, and one 5-9 year old male.
My speculation is that these census records do in fact relate to the same Abner and Hannah you are researching. The fact that Hannah is listed as head of the household in 1840 may indicate that Abner died between 1830 and 1840. I suspect that further research of records from Leicester or Livingston County will yield even more information.
I would love to learn more about Abner and Hannah's other children. Do you mind sharing with me what information you have and your sources? Are we perhaps related?
Thanks,
Melanie
