Matthew Ennis, Train Conductor - New Jersey
Posted by: Tom Smith (ID *****9149) Date: May 10, 2002 at 13:45:21
  of 1638

Looking for other descendants of Matthew Ennis. He was born about 1815 in Ireland, died August 11, 1887 in Long Branch, NJ. He married Mary Gantley, and had (I think) 9 children. I believe that he is my ancestor, but am seeking more information. Childrens names, that I have are, Susan, Lawrence, Margaret, Julia, Elizabeth, Mary, James, ????, and Hannah.

I was unable to locate a death certificate, but I have his obituary from the Red Bank Register, which read:

"Matthew Ennis, who was conductor of the first train ever run over the New Jersey Southern railway, died at his home at Long Branch, on Thursday, August 11th. He was 72 years of age and had retired from active railroad duty. the cause of death was general decay caused by advancing age."

Any help would be appreciated, Tom Smith
