Dear Barbara; We might be in a position to help each other on the Enlow/Inlow family of Gordon County, Georgia. I am a descendant of one of the daughters of William and Elizabeth Inlow; Cornelia C. Inlow born May 1838 in South Carolina was the sixth child of William and Elizabeth. A lot of my information that follows comes from a Mrs Elaine ??? who lived in Floyd County which near Gordon County. We exchanged e-mail for a time but I have not been able to contact her recently. Before Elaine I struggled with the Inlow family and even had William Inlow the son of Deason Enlow of South Carolina, but learned from a gentlemen living in the Dallas area that Deason Enlow's William was his not mine. Since that time I have searched for a connection of William to the large Inlow/Enlow family but with little success. I have reached the conclusion that William Inlow was the William Inlow of Union County, South Carolina. Another connection that has proven helpful is a descendant of William A. Ray of Gordon County, GA. William A. Ray is believe to be a brother of Monroe Macon Ray (my great grandfather) maybe a twin. William A. Ray married Nancy Wofford who was the younger sister of John W. Wofford who married Nancy Inlow, sister of Cornelia Inlow wife of Monroe Macon Ray. Elaine once wrote: "My gr-gr-gr-grandfather was William M. Inlow b. 1790 in SC (Deason Enlow's William was born 1787). He was married to Elizabeth (maybe Miller) b. 1800 SC. They moved their family to GA in January 1846. They settled in Gordon County by 1850. William was a cabinet maker. William Thomas Inlow (son of Wm. M) was my gr-gr-grandfather and his son William Morris (Can) Inlow was my gr-grandfather. 'Can' was my grandmother's dad. I have a lot of info about them after the move to GA. But know nothing before that. I suspect they were from Newberry Co. SC. Can you confirm that? I live in Floyd Co. GA. which is next to Gordon Co. GA. The eight children were (information and data taken from my FGS notes on FTM): 1) JAMES G. INLOW born 1820 in South Carolina -- I have some history on him. He married a Mary ??? and they had two children, Mary Elizabeth Inlow and James Inlow. He lived in Ellijay, Gilmer County, Georgia, and after the Civil War Captain Inlow was sitting on a bench in front of the court house in Gilmer County when a man named John Hatley rode through on a horse and shot James G. Inlow in the head killing him. The story is in the book "Cherokee Georgia, the Enchanted Land" by Lawrence L. Stanley according to Elaine. 2) CHARLOTTE INLOW (1823 - Unknown) was not on the 1850 Census of William Inlow in Gordon County, since she was already married having married Stephen Griffin 8 December 1846 in Gilmer County, Georgia. They lived in Ellijay in Gilmer County which was the same place her brother, James G. Inlow lived. Stephen was a law officer in Ellijay and because of the killing of Charlotte's brother and others in the years after the Civil War they moved to Alabama. Stephen was the son of Benjamin and Mary Reed Griffin. Stephen might have been married previously to a Sarah Walker. Stephen was born in 1808 in South Carolina. 3) A great great granddaughter, Elaine identifies W. T. as WILLIAM THOMAS INLOW (27 Dec. 1827 - between 7 Mar 1900 & 1904), the third child of William and Elizabeth. His granddaughter said he was one of the first school teachers in Gordon County and a land surveyor. He was county surveyor for a period of four years before the Civil War and helped survey the Gordon County lines. It is known that he went to an academy in Ellijay, Gilmer County, Georgia, and family tradition said that he attended William and Mary College, but there is no proof. He married a Mitilda ???, and it is believed that her maiden name was Freeman, and a sister to Mary Freeman, wife of William Inlow's brother, James G. Inlow. A W. T. Inlow enlisted in Co. D, 8th Ga. Battalion, Gist Reg. Walker Division, Army of Tenn. He received a pension (Gordon Co.). He is reported by Elaine to have had a son named William Morris (Can) Inlow. He was Elaine's grandmother's father. She also reports that the family was from Newberry County, South Carolina, but I am not sure about that. 4) MARGARET INLOW (1832-unknown) was the fourth child of William and Elizabeth. She married William Knight. She was dismissed from the church for disputing her husband, a story that has certainly resulted in many comments among the descendants of the Inlow family (can't remember where I got that story -- I didn't document it -- and for that I deserved to be punished). 5) NANCY INLOW (1835-31 Jan 1904) was married twice, first to John W. Wofford then to Allen Chastain. John W. Wofford was the brother of a young sister, Nancy Wofford who married William A. Ray, suspected brother of Monroe Macon Ray who married Cornelia Inlow. The marriage records of Gordon County were destroyed during the Civil War. There is little doubt that the Woffords were from South Carolina and I suspect they might have known the Inlow in the Union County area, but I don't know that for a fact. ( I am glad you are tackling the Woffords -- that's more than I care to do.) 6) CORNELIA C. INLOW (May 1838-aft 1919). In the letter from Elaine of Georgia she reports that she was told that Cornelia was named "Culpurney Elizabeth Inlow, and that she married a Ray and moved to Missouri." (actually Mississippi) My grandmother (1871-1966) told me herself that her mother's name was Cornelia and that she married Monroe Macon Ray and after the Civil War moved to Panola County, Mississippi. This is where my Coffman name comes in, as Othello Ray married David Green Coffman of Lafayette County, Mississippi. I have good records here. 7) EUGENIA CAROLINA INLOW (15 May 1840 - 9 June 1918) married I. E. Wofford, and that is all I know 8) FRANCES ELLEN INLOW (1843 - 6 Aug 1882) No other information accept that a Miss F. E. Inlow married L. M. Knight, June 1, 1865. Elaine reports that she talked to the grandson of Frances and L. M. about 18 years ago. He reported to her that L. M. Knight got the home place of the Inlows when Elizabeth Inlow died. She reports that property has a lake and campsites on it today and that it is located on Salacoa Creek. If you don't think this is too long I could put it on the Genforum Enlow messages? Let me know. Also if other have answered you with information worth having I would appreciate anything of value. Does this provide any help to you? If so the pay is you have to help connect the William Inlow to the Abraham and Mary Deason Enlow family. Who is the heck is William Inlow/Enlow's father? Harold R. Coffman hcoffman2@home.com
