Terri, My English family has connection with Mt. Meleray. In the early part of the 20th C, a group of Cistercian nuns, (Mt. Meleray are Cistercian i.e. Trappist monks) with the assistance of the Abbott at Mt. Meleray, established a convent in the estate property of Glencairn, using the main house as their chapel, dormitory, kitchen, and workrooms. My great grandparents and their children had been workers on this estate for the Bushe family. The English family left Ireland in dribs and drabs from 1838 to 1853. Bushe descendants were forced to leave the property during the Irish Civil War and the property was abandoned. Thus, it came into the hands of the Cistercian nuns who call the Abbey St. Mary's.
What is now St. Mary's Abbey was originally the site of one of Richard Boyle's, (The Great Earl of Cork) many castles were built as fortification of the Blackwater. When I was last in Ireland a few years ago, I made the acquainrance of Sister Gertrude Kelly who was writing a history of the place. She showed me the part of the building that was the original don john of the old castle known then as Ballygarron(1619-1695). In the Cromwellian Settlement the name was changed to Castle Richard and remained so from 1695 to 1819. My great grandmother, Mary English, and her 7 siblings are shown on their baptismal entries to be resident at Castle Richard.
