Was my ENGLISH Irish ?

By his own words in a document of mid-1811, one John ENGLISH, my Gt. x 4 Grandfather, said "I am now bordering on 49 years of age." This would have him born in late 1762.

As he enlisted into the British Army in Monks Town, Co. Cork, Ireland, in October 1783, it would also be a fair assumption that he was born in Ireland. But where ?

Must have had the Irish "gift of the Blarney." He married twice, (second time bigamy), & spent much time in recruiting duties, "sweet-talking" young farm boys into taking the 'King's-shilling." Sounds like a true Irishman to me.

After having 3 (known) children by each wife, he died a Captain in Ceylon in early 1813, after near 30 years serving "his King & Country". (again, his very words.)

To this date, no military documents as yet unearthed at the British Archives at Kew, London, shed light on his origin, even after he gained commissioned rank in early 1800.

I have a feeling that he was of the "Established Church of Ireland," rather than R.C., as both his marriages were conducted in Protestant churches in England.(1786 & 1807)

Can anybody with a fair knowledge of the lines of Irish ENGLISH, & any mentions of a John, born around 1782, please help me out here ?
