William Gunn Engledow was born in Tennessee, most likely Warren Co., in 1827. Came to Nacogdoches Co., Texas with parents about 1835. Married Nancy Eliza Ridgell July 14, 1850 (R. B. Blake's Early Marriages of Nacogdoches Co.) Volunteered for service with the Confederacy and was elected captain by the men of his company at beginning of the war. Was promoted to Lt. Colonel before end of war. William G. died in 1870 in Knoxville. The last few years of his life, he was in court much of the time, defending himself against legal suits. He had borrowed money shortly before volunteering for service in the war, the purpose of this loan very likely being for his wife and children to live on while he was away in the war, or possibly to buy supplies for his men. Was a sheriff in Warren Co. at one time. engledow@earthlink.net
