My paternal grandfather, Harold Johnson, and his brother were either fostered or adopted by a Robert Engle in Chicago between 1936 and 1938 after their biological parents died within 6 months of each other. My grandfather was almost 18 years old and his brother was 15. I cannot find any official record of the adoption and can't find anything more about the adoptive/foster father, Robert Engle. Since it's between census's and such a short period of time I don't really know where to look. All I have are the social security applications of my grandfather (1938) and greatuncle (1941) that list Robert Engle as their father.
Does anyone have ideas or suggestions?
