I do not know how common it was - I suppose there might have been quite a lot of umarried mothers around the UK....... My Great Grandfather was born 1865 in Harrogate and his birth registration had no father listed; his mother listed as Ann Hartley. According to his birth registration he was born Albert Potterton Hartley - but we knew him as William Albert Hartley and it was not until I had a search done for his marriage registration (knew his wife's name) did we find out that was not his name at all!!!!........ I searched for a LONG time time trying to find Ann Hartley and her son Albert in the UK when he would have been a boy but to no avail........ Eventually, it was discovered that he was brought up in the Preston Family household (Bradford Yorks) and Martha Preston, his "sister" had married a Moore. Albert had been raised as Willie Preston!!!! (And I had been searching for a Martha Hartley who married a Moore for ages & ages!!!!) That threw a whole new set of questions at me........ but digging and digging for quite a while has convinced me that my Great Great Grandmother was not Ann Hartley BUT Annie Potterton who would have been about 16/17 years old at the time of his birth and gave him up. I am also convinced that his father was a Thomas Hartley (cannot really prove it though) - I believe there is a connection between the Potterton's and this particular Hartley not so much in family ties other than the Potterton's ran a boarding house and this Thomas may have stayed there at one time........ (long story!!!) Annie Potterton it seems went on to marry and had 2 more sons, then appears to have left her husband and may have been involved with other men (who knows how many) and had even MORE children!!!!!!! I would definitely love to be able to confirm just how many children there actually were........ Notify Administrator about this message?
