I wonder if Nellie's birthplace was actually Lewes? The census says Uckfield-Lewes. I went ahead and ordered the birth certificate so I guess I'll have to wait and see what it says for parents' names on that. I will let you know when I receive it. Thanks Do you know if it was common for a mother in the UK to be unmarried and just keep her children, using the mother's surname?
