Hello Warren, William and Jane Wild, and three of their sons are actually enumerated in the Finningley Civil Parish, Yorkshire, in a section of Awkley called Ellors, though not together, and not under the same surname, just to make things more confusing. Finningley is one of those civil parishes that crossed county lines in 1841, as noted in the Topographical Dictionary of England published in 1848. See the entry from Lewis's below, which comes from: http://www.british-history.ac.uk/report.asp?compid=50963#s14 FINNINGLEY (St. Oswald), a parish, in the union of Doncaster, partly in the Hatfield division of the wapentake of Bassetlaw, N. division of the county of Nottingham, and partly in the soke of Doncaster, W. riding of York, 4 miles (N. by E.) from Bawtry; containing, with the townships of Aukley and Blaxton, 1209 inhabitants. The township of Finningley comprises by estimation 2340a. 2r. 25p.: the village is large, but irregularly built. The living is a rectory, valued in the king's books at £13. 4. 9½.; net income, £600; patron, J. Harvey, Esq. The waste lands of the parish were inclosed in 1774; and in 1778 an allotment was assigned to the rector in lieu of all tithes, except those of 300 acres having no common right, which have recently been commuted for a rent-charge of £44. 10. The church is an ancient structure, with a square embattled tower and a Norman porch. There is a chapel of ease at Aukley, erected by Mr. Harvey, T. W. Childers, Esq., and the Rev. G. H. Woodhouse. In the village is a place of worship for Wesleyans. ____ I had originally searched for the Wild family in in the 1841 census in Awkley, Nottinghamshire. The search was conducted at the Origins.net subscription website. This search for the Wild surname in Awkley, Nottinghamshire produced no results, and so I did a wild card search for anyone with a surname beginning with "Wi" living in Awkley, Finningley, Nottinghamshire. The page that downloaded is page 3 for High Street. At the top of census page 3 is the listing for 55 year old William Lee, farmer, and 50 year old Mary Lee, both born in the county. Also in the Lee household are 25 year old William Hill, 15 year old George Hill, 20 year old Mary Johnson, and 8 year old Mary Pearson. The person with the surname beginning with Wi, is after the Lee household. This is for 40 year old Thomas Williams, ag lab; and other Williams in the household, 40 year old Ann, 20 year old Hannah, 15 year old Sarah, 10 year old Mary, 6 year old Martha, 3 year old Charlotte, and twins, 3 month old Susannah and 3 month old Thomas. Warren, see if you can find this enumeration, page 3 for Awkley, Notts. at Ancestry.com If you locate this census, go to the bottom of the page and you'll see an entry below the margin, probably made by a census official, that reads: "This Sch copied from the Sch continuing that pt. of the Parish which is in the co. of York. -" My translation of this is "This Schedule copied from the Schedule containing that part of the Parish which is in the county of York. This tells me that other residents of Finningley were enumerated in Yorkshire, not Nottinghamshire, as the Finningley civil parish crosses borders. I then looked for William and Jane Wild and their children in the civil parish of Finningley, in Yorkshire. The index for William and Jane is below. WILD WILLIAM M 45 YORKSHIRE ELLORS AWKLEY FINNINGLEY YORKSHIRE WILD JANE F 45 YORKSHIRE ELLORS AWKLEY FINNINGLEY YORKSHIRE Go back to the Ancestry search page for the 1841 census and see if you can find William and Jane living at Ellors, Awkley, Yorkshire by typing in at least one of their names, the county Yorkshire, and Ellors or Awkley as place names. You can narrow the search further by typing in that William or Jane were 45 years old. As you know the 1841 census, when it downloads, contains two pages that you can search. William and Jane will be on the left hand page, which is page 13. They will be listed directly under the family of William and Mary Fields. The Fields are the first to be shown on page 13. Now, go to Page 14, the next page. Scroll down until you come to the entries that the enumerator has crossed out. Go to the entry for 85 year old James Slack, who is listed 4th entry from the bottom. Directly under James Slack are George, 20; Jarvis, 13; and Charles, 11. They are dittoed as Slack, but I believe these are the sons of William and Jane. No wonder this section was crossed out. I checked the next page to see if William and Charlotte are listed, but did not find them. George, Jarvis, and Charles are not listed in the index for Yorkshire at the Origins.net website, which means the Origins transcribers did not bother with them, as their entries were crossed out. But, you have to figure, what are the chances that a George, Jarvis, and Charles would be located on an adjoining page to William and Jane Wild, even though the last names for these sons is given as Slack, rather than Wild. In checking the 1861 census for Nottinghamshire at Origins.net, Finningley isn't even listed any more as a civil parish, so I am wondering if the parish and some or all of its townlands were transferred to Yorkshire between 1841 and 1861. Best of Luck Warren. Dave Boylan Notify Administrator about this message?
