Mary Ann Barnes married Charles Harvey on September 15, 1871 in Ampton, Suffolk. I know of Charles on the 1871 Census but he was still single at the time of the census & living in Ampton. Know of them as a couple on the 1881 census also, living in Ampton. The confusing part is the 1881 census says Mary Ann was born in Swaffham, Norfolk but the 1891 census says she was born in Newmarket, Cambridge/Suffolk. There is a Mary Ann born in Newmarket to a mother Elizabeth Barnes with no father mentioned. Not sure if that is her. I see there is a couple of Swaffham's near Newmarket. There is a Mary Ann Barnes still at the Workhouse in Newmarket on the 1871 census but don't know if this is her. Tried finding her born in Swaffham, Norfolk with help from someone there in the museum/library but nothing found. No idea how Mary Ann & Charles met or the reason her father is shown as a George Leech. Perhaps he's the real father or was she adopted, taken in & raised, whatever. All a big mystery. Just wondered if the census for 1841/1851 would help pin point her as new born living with a mother perhaps in Norfolk. The two different locations of birth has me going in circles.
