Hello Joanne,

I located an 1802 baptism transcription for a Samuel Branford. This may be the Samuel Branford you are looking for. The transcription was found at the FreeREG website at: http://freereg.rootsweb.com/cgi/Search.pl

The transcription shows that Samuel’s baptism took place in St. Peter’s Church, Swainsthorpe on 31 January 1802, and that his parents were Richard Branford and Esther Fuller.

The volunteer at FreeREG copied the baptism from the Archdeacon’s Transcripts for St. Peter’s Church of England. This is indicated by the initials “At” following the name of the church in the transcription just below:

County Norfolk
Place Swainsthorpe
Church St Peter, At = Archdeacon’s Transcripts

Mother Forename Esther

I also located two baptism transcriptions at the FReeREG website for two Branfords who may have been Samuel’s older brothers. These are for William Barnford/Branfield, son of Richard and Esther, who was baptized in St. Peter’s Church, Swainsthrorpe, on 5 April 1789, and for Edmund, baptized May 1787.

The first transcription for William below spells the surname Barnford, while the second transcription for William spells his surname as Branfield.

Both records however, show that William’s birth took place on 5 April 1789 and that his baptism took place on 10 April 1789 in St. Peter’s

Next is the baptism transcription for Edmund Branford, son of Richard Branford and “Easter” Fuller. The baptism took place in St. Peter’s, Swainsthorpe.

Either the person who transcribed the baptism for FreeREG, or the parish priest who recorded the baptism in 1787, made an error in stating that William was born 26 May 1787 and that he was baptized 21 May 1787, when it should be the other way around.

I also searched the FreeREG website for the marriage of Richard Branford and Esther Fuller, but did not find it. Their marriage record may not have been transcribed as yet.

In addition, I looked for the baptism transcriptions for Elijah, James & Elizabeth Branford who were the children of Samuel Branford and Hannah Elizabeth Baxter, as stated in your message to the GenForum.

I searched for their baptisms in Swainsthorpe as well as in other Norfolk parishes and other counties as well, but did not find any information pertaining to them.

Their baptisms may not have been transcribed as yet, or it’s possible they were born in another county and parish whose church registers have not been transcribed.

I also looked for Samuel’s 1833 church burial record in Swainsthorpe at the FreeREG website, but did not find it. His burial record may not have been transcribed.

But, if you would like to see what church records you can find for your Branfords in Swainsthorpe, you will be able to, as the Latter Day Saints (LDS) have filmed the Archdeacon’s Transcripts, the Parish Registers, and Parish Register Transcripts for the Swainsthorpe Church of England.

Below is information and film number for the Swainsthorpe Archdeacon’s Transcripts. The information does not name the church, but I believe it would be St. Peter‘s:

The Archdeacon’s Transcripts can be found in LDS film number 1526813. You can order the film from your local Family History Center.

Below is information and film numbers for the Swainsthorpe Church of England Parish Registers.

The second film lists marriages in the Church of England for Swainsthorpe for the years 1813-1904. You could look at this microfilm to see if perhaps the children of Samuel Branford and Hannah Baxter were married in the parish:

Next are the Swainsthorpe Transcripts of the parish registers:

If you are interested in further research into the Church of England Parish Registers for Swainsthorpe, I recommend ordering all the above mentioned microfilms, as one film may be of better quality then the others.

For example, I found a burial transcription for a Maria Branford, which shows she was buried from St. Peter’s Church in Swainsthorpe on 2 March 1810. The transcription is shown to have been compiled from the Archdeacon’s Transcripts for St. Peter’s. However, a note accompanying the record by the transcriber, states that Maria’s maiden name could not be deciphered because the record was “faded” and suffered “water damage.”

The record follows:

County Norfolk
Place Swainsthorpe

I next searched the FreeREG website for the individual baptism transcriptions of Richard Branford and Esther Fuller in Norfolk.

I did not locate the baptism of Richard, but did find the baptism of an Esther Fuller, which may be a possibility.

The transcription shows Esther Fuller was baptized in the St. Michael’s Church, Aslacton, on 25 July 1756, and that her parents were Edmund and Sarah Fuller, though no maiden name is given for her mother in the baptism.

Please see below:

County Norfolk

I also searched for the marriage transcription of Samuel Branford and Hannah Baxter at the FreeREG website but did not find it. But, I did find an index of their marriage at the Latter Day Saints website at www.familysearch.org

The index is not sourced, which means I am not sure how accurate it is.

The index shows Samuel Branford and Hannah Baxter were married in Barford, Norfolk on 9 January 1826.

The index was submitted to the LDS website by a member of the Latter Day Saints Church.

I next went back to the FreeREG website to see if perhaps Hannah Elizabeth Baxter was born in Barford, as marriages traditionally took place in the bride’s parish.

I believe I did locate Hannah’s baptism, showing that she was christened in St. Bartolph’s Church (of England) in 1807, no month or day given.

The transcription also shows that Hannah’s parents were Davey Baxter and Mary Hilling.

The baptism was transcribed from the St. Bartolph’s “AT’s,” that is, Archdeacon’s Transcripts.

I then found what may be the marriage transcription for David Baxter and Mary Hillen. The record shows the couple were married in St. Peter and St. Paul’s Church, Wramplingham, Norfolk, on 15 October 1805.

The transcription gives the “PRs” as the source for the marriage. The PRs refer to the “Parish Registers” the for St. Peter and St. Paul Church.

The transcription shows that David was from Barford, and that Mary was “Otp,” that is, “Of this parish,” meaning Wramplingham.

Unfortunately, the names of the parents of the bride and groom are not given, but the transcription shows the witnesses to the marriage were William Hillen and Mary Skipper.

Notes at the end of the transcription show that Banns of marriage were announced before the marriage.

I looked for Mary Hillen’s baptism transcription at the FreeREG site, but did not find it. However, the LDS have filmed the Archdeacon’s Transcripts, the Parish Register Transcripts, and the Parish Registers for Wramplingham.

These registers go back to the 1500s. If you order the films, you may be able to uncover more information about Mary Hillen and her family.

All three films shown above (1526812, 887920, and 1471296), can be ordered from your nearest Family History Center.

If I have the choice of ordering more than one film of the registers for a specific church, I usually order them all, as one film may be of better quality than the others. The marriage transcription from the FreeREG site for David Baxter and Mary Hillen, seen above, was copied, I believe, from the Parish Registers found in LDS microfilm number 1471296

Continuing with research at the FreeREG site, I located the baptism transcriptions of two other children of Davey Baxter and Mary “Hilling.” Both children, Pleasance and Mary Ann are shown to have been baptized in St. Bartolph’s Church, Barford, with the baptism of Pleasance occurring in 1810 and that of Mary Ann in 1811.

I believe I also located the baptism transcription for David Baxter at the FreeREG website. The record shows David was christened in St. Bartolph’s in 1782. The transcriber took the information from the St. Bartolph’s Archdeacon Transcripts, but questions the name of David’s father. His father may have been Richard.

David’s mother is shown to be Elizabeth, with no maiden name provided in the record.
