Sarah Leigh, Sampson Waring, Shrewsbury
Sarah Leigh and Sampson Waring married in Calvert Co, MD in the mid 1600s. He was probably from Shrewsbury, Shropshire, on England's border with Wales, and probably the son of Basil Waring of Shrewsbury. He had immigrated first to Lower Norfolk Co, Virginia, and had come to Maryland with the influx of Puritans when Virginia drove them out. She was a widow, had been married to a Young, and came to the relationship with four children. With Sampson she had one son, Basil.
She had a brother -- or a father -- named Francis Leigh whose will left personalty to Basil and to two neighbors.
We don't know where she came from -- or where the Young family lived -- but there was a Leigh family in Shrewsbury who had members named Francis. Many people came to Virginia before they came to Maryland, and one of the early "adventurers" to Virginia, and a sponsor of the London Company, was Sir Francis Leigh.
Would love to hear from anyone who has any ideas about how to tie all this together!
