It appears as though Mary Ann's elder brother Charles may well have been the Charles who married Mary Alice Bugg in Newark registration district in the Dec quarter 1851. Newark registration district included both Barkston and Fulbeck.
[I came across this on ancestry, and didn’t think it would be the right Charles, as the mother of Charles was listed as Mary HALL/HALE..
But I was going to go back to it and look at it again, even before you suggested it, as a possible way of going at this from a different angle.]
In the 1851 census Charles was unmarried, a blacksmith living with his parents in Barkston.
In 1861 Mary Alice, blacksmith's wife, husband abroad, was living at Fulbeck, 5 miles from Barkston, with her mother along with her two children, one of whom was named Mary Askew (or Ayscough when she married) SCOTT.
[Not sure that I came across a tree that had Askew or Ayscough as a middle name, there is no one in the trees I havehave that as a middle name…]
It needs the marriage cert to confirm that this is the right Charles. Assuming it is, is this the source for the assertion that Mary Ann's mother was Ann “Nan” Ayscough? If it is it's pretty thin evidence!
[No this was NOT the reason that is was assumed the mother’s last name was Ayscough.
Still digging to see where the info came from…]
If it were the case that there were two William Scott marriages to two Anns, named for the sake of argument, Ayscough and Hale, and one of the children was given a middle name Ayscough, that would be pretty good evidence as to which Ann was which. But to use the middle name Ayscough to assert that the grandmother must have been Ayscough without having the marriage is an enormous leap of faith. Without the marriage it's just speculation.
[Again I don’t have anyone in my trees with the middle name of Ayscough….honest!!!]
One Ancestry tree shows Charles with his mother being Mary Hall, but with no explanation as to why the daughter had a middle name Ayscough.
[Again not sure if the tree I noticed was connected to Mary Hall….trying to find that again, and see where it goes and possibly rule it out.]
Just a few more random thoughts on the family!
[The usual discussion over the years was if the mother name was Nancy Askew as compared to Ann/Nan Asycough…..been awhile since I had to bring all this info to the forefront of my brain…so as I think I said I am still digging through my info…]
[Appreciate your thoughts.]
