Convict Transport and emmigration to Barbados
Published in 2012,"Sugar In The Blood" by Andrea Stuart, Published by Alfred A Knopf. This book chronicles the Ashby family's rise in sugar plantations. This book is especially good in revealing the slavery end of the business and the empire that grew from it. It also is a good book to explain the route slaves took from Africa and indentured servants (or convicts) from England to the Caribbean and American colonies. From the 1700's to present day it explains the importance of the Caribbean islands in trade to the American Colonies and England. It will give you a better understanding of how plantations were run and how this template was transferred to the American Colonies. The abolition of slavery there is also well documented. If you had family in Barbados then they probably had some relation the sugar empire, as either slaves, indentured servants, plantation owners or freemen.
