2014 marks the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Gate Pa (29 April 1864) and Te Ranga (21 June 1864), at Tauranga, New Zealand between the British and Maori.
I am working on a list of those who fought at these battles (including biographical information) from the 43rd (Monmouthshire) Light Infantry commanded by Lt Col H.J.P. Booth (died 30 April 1864) and the 68th (Durham) Light Infantry Regiment - 1st Battalion commanded by Lt Col H.H. Greer, and others who were there.
The 43rd Regiment were in NZ 1863 - 1866 and the 68th Regiment from 1864 -1866.
I have lists of those who were killed and wounded at these battles, along with the New Zealand Medal Roll for the 43rd Light Infantry Regiment. I also have the Return of Arms Surrendered in the Tauranga District by the Maori after these battles. I have also searched the newspapers of the time that are online on Paperspast.
While research is ongoing, I would welcome any biographical information on those from the above regiments who were at Gate Pa and Te Ranga and were either discharged in NZ or returned to England in 1866.
