Spooners from Bintry (Bintree) Norfolk who emigrated to Canada
I don’t know if anyone can help me but here is my problem.
Going through my late mother's possessions I found the following letter.
ToMr &Mrs Thomas Suddes, 9 Ivy Terrace, Craghead, Stanley, County Durham. England.
From 1254, Elm Street, Medicine Hat, Alberta, Canada.
Dear Cousins, Here at last is the long promised wedding present I hope you will like it all our best wishes to you both with it. love from cousins Violet Phile Victor & Yvette.
There were 2 photographs with the letter which show
i) Phile and Violet, taken a year after their wedding.
ii) Violet with her children Victor and Yvette
I have contacted Medicine Hat Library and Museum Service and they have told me that a Pamphile Dufort was living at the above address 1944 to 1948.
My parents were married in 1945.
The wedding present by the way was a tablecloth
I have discovered that Violet Mary Dufort died aged 51 years and was buried in Hillside cemetery 7th Nov 1960.
Phile died 1 Ap 1961 aged 70.
They had 5 sons.
Violet had arrived in Canada aboard the MEGANTIC which docked in Quebec 6th June 1929. She had answered an advertisement for domestic assistants to settler families.
Her brother Albert had arrived in Quebec aboard the AURANIAa year earlier on 19th August 1928. After working on the Pairies, I believe he eventually became a coal miner and on BC Archives I have found that he died , a widower,in Kelowna aged 37 on 17th July 1939.
Their father were James Oliver Spooner , born 10th October 1869 in Bintry, Norfolk. He travelled to Ferryhill County Durham to work as a carter in the coalmines aroundFerryhilltogether with his father James Oliver and his mother Sarah Ann Spooner (the daughter of James Spooner and Sarah Hodge). He married Margaret Laws, born 23rd October 1864.
Together with Albert and Violet they had a second daughter named Prudence.
Are you any relation to any of these Spooners?
.
Regards Eric Suddes
