Morning Rick
As you thought he was still in the Army at his Death in 1879, I took a look in the Military Records on Find My Past.
Clearly not your Fred Atkins, I did find a Frederick William Atkins, vorn 1866, first joined Army in 1880, then rejoined in 1902m eventually discharged.
Amongst the Scanned Documents, was his Civilian Death Certificate in 1951.
I presume that this was probably included to terminate any Army Pension.
Interesting what comes to light.
Unfortunately, there does not appear to be any similar record for your FA.
Acknowledging that it is expensive on FMP to obtain any BMD, I think if you are to make any progress, you have got to "bite the bullet" - or migrate all of the family including records retrospectively to Scotland!
On Scotland's People, the cost would be about £1.50, 6 Credits, as it would be available to VIEW and Download as a Scanned IMAGE.
