Do you have his marriage and death certificates? Is there no mention of his parentage there?
I did find in Winchester a couple of sons b. to a Edward and Mary Boxall listed on the IGI - James in 1832 and William in 1835.
I think this family may be in Lambeth in 1841:
Edward Boxall, 35
Mary, 32
Edward, 15
Charles, 14
John, 12
Richard, 10
James, 8
William, 6
Robert, 4
If this is yours, then the age is a little off (as will be the emigration date), but there was a connection to Winchester.
