Parents of Jane EBREY, b. Shropshire abt 1839
I am trying to confirm the parents of Jane EBREY, my second great grandmother. Family research some time ago reported that she was b. in 1839 and baptized at Hodnet in northern Shropshire.
Her birth year in UK and US census records range from 1837 to 1855! Neither FreeBMD nor IGI has a birth record for her for Hodnet or for nearby Prees where the Ebrey family lived.
The family researcher said her parents were listed as Thomas Ebrey and Anne. I can not find a record for their marriage. Jane is not in a census with her parents that I can see.
In 1861 Jane Ebrey, recorded as age 22, was keeping house for her uncle Robert Ebrey and his sons Henry and Frederick, all butchers in Prees. I do find Robert and many of his siblings in IGI records, but not a sibling named Thomas of the right age to have a daughter in 1839.
Most of Robert's siblings are listed as children of Thomas Ebrey and Isabel Gilchrist. I believe this Thomas Ebrey is the same man listed under Butchers in the 1828-1829 Pigot & Co.s Commercial Directory as Thomas Aberey & Sons, Prees.
In June 1866 in nearby Wem, Jane Ebrey married Benjamin Booth, a carpenter, b. in Hodnet, son of Joseph C. Booth and Mary Jemima Lawton. Benjamin and Jane traveled to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in 1866 on their honeymoon according to family lore. They decided to stay.
All advice and information welcome, including how to view or obtain Jane and Benjamin's marriage record. I have the volume and page number.
Thank you!
