Hello again my friends I have another bothersome one for you (LOL) - my maternal GG Grandmother Sarah Ann Broadbent b1869 at Myton, Hull, Ery, England she was married to William Frederick Mathews b1863c at St Day, Cornwall, England - [10691] [MRIN:3830] (he is another story too - but will post a new message about him separately. Noted events in Sarah Ann's life: *1871 Census: With Foreman grandparents at Skirbeck. *1881 Census: She resided at “The Convent”, Wellington Street, Bradford, York, England, and was a Pupil Teacher. Sara Ann ranaway from “The Convent” in 1890 at the age of 21 years. She must have had some kind of money and bought a one-way ticket on a ship heading for Australia, as far away as she could get away from her parents (there was some kind of controversy regarding her parentage / family life). I was told a story by my grandmother (Sarah Ann's first daughter) that her mother was the daughter of William Broadbent (Surgeon). Sarah Ann spent most of her growing up years in "The Convent" and the only time she was with any family was in the 1871 Census at the age of 2 years. Sarah Ann could speak very fluently in Parisian French, and often stayed in France with a Great Aunt who was very old (102years old). I was wondering how can I find records of Sarah Ann at "The Convent" about who paid for her stay there? Who did she stay with in France etc?? Sarah Ann’s mother Susan Foreman had found out Sarah Ann’s address and constantly wrote to her to come home, my Grandmother said, that Sarah Ann received some jewelery from her mother (Susan), but instead of giving the jewelery to her daughters, Ivy and Thelma, she gave the jewelery to her daughters friends, that is how bitter Sarah Ann was to her family, she really didn't want anything to do with her mother or England, completely wiped her family, sad really, but that is life I suppose. Sarah's parents are: Susan Elizabeth Foreman b June Quarter of 1844 at Boston, LINCOLN Lincolnshire England and William Broadbent b1836 at LINCOLN Lincolnshire England. Noted events in Susan Foreman's life: *1871 Census: Boarder with daughter Harriet Kathleen at 62 Walker St, Myton (head Daniel Swallow - grocer) described as sailor's wife. *1881 Census: With parents and daughter Katie (Harriet Kathleen) at 9 Fydell St, Boston (described as widow). * 1901 Census: Living at 100 Richmond Rd, Paddington (only member of household). * She worked as a Monthly nurse (1901). Noted events in William Broadbent's life: *He worked as a sailor. *1881 Census: Abel Seaman on SS <G N Wilkinson> in Portsmouth Harbour (Master Wm Hodgson - born Sunderland). * 1901 Census: Living 1 Horn's Lane, Sunderland - Proprietor of Lodging House with 35 Lodgers present). Death of William Broadbent 3rd January 1910 at 1 Horn's Lane, Sunderland age 74 - a common lodging house keeper - cause Cerebral haemorrhage and exhaustion Informant G A Shepherd, nephew, present at the death of 21 South View, near Coxhoe, Durham. General Notes: It is probable that William and his wife separated or that he abandoned her. Both were describing themselves as widowed by 1881. This is my story, hope someone can point me in the right direction. Thanks to you all you are doing a great job. Love Kathleen Notify Administrator about this message?
