I'm tracing John RODWAY, b. about 1818, a bootmaker, later a furniture dealer in Deptford, Kent (now part of London) England. On two censuses, he gave Eltham, Kent, as his birthplace. I have found a christening in the Eltham parish records: "1818 6th Decr. John Son of James & Mary Rodway Eltham Labourer". (LDS Family History Library film #307730) There is also a Richard son of James & Mary Rodway chr. April 1, 1821. On the 1871 census, however, the entry for John Rodway gives a birthplace of "Gloucester". Details of household members confirm it is definitely the right man. Did the census-taker make a mistake? Was John born in Gloucs., but christened in Eltham, Kent? Did his son or daughter-in-law misremember family history when they filled out the form? (Maybe John's parents, not John, were from Gloucester.) I have found that there is a couple named Mary & James RODWAY in Wotton-under-Edge, Gloucestershire, with children Dan 1801, Jane 1802, James 1803, and Mary Catherine 1806. (IGI, batch no. 7211813) Can any researchers shed any light on either of the Mary and James RODWAY families? Thanks--Jane Notify Administrator about this message?
