Hi Sue, I was interested in your posted message, as I too have ancestors in the area east of Spalding Lincs. I thought I would give you a bit of information I have found on a few of the villages in and around Cowbit, Lincolnshire, with the time frame of about 1842. COWBIT is described as a small village 3 miles S of Spalding on the east side of Deeping Fen. The Spalding Union included Cowbit, Moulton, Pinchbeck, Weston, Spalding and Wickham. The area has large marshlands (as does a lot of Lincolnshire). The church listed for Cowbit is St. Mary; consecrated in 1486. Mention is made of the Gedney Family having estates there. I found JOSEPH GEDNEY listed for Cowbit as a farmer and grazer. There were no Wright's listed for Cowbit. PINCHBECK is located 2 miles N of Spalding and I found a FRANCIS WRIGHT listed as a farmer and grazer. WESTON is 3 1/2 miles NE by E of Spalding; with a population given at the time of 567. Two Gedney's were listed there as farmers and grazers: JOHN GEDNEY of Weston Hills (a farming district)and WILLIAM GEDNEY of the Fen. I also found a few Gedney's listed as land owners: JOSEPH GEDNEY of Cowbit, Representatives of JAMES GEDNEY of Cowbit, Mrs. GEDNEY of Spalding, JOSEPH GEDNEY of Leake, SARAH GEDNEY of Leake, and WILLIAM GEDNEY of Spalding, owning a large amount of land compared to the others. There are also many WRIGHT's listed as land owners throughout Lincs. You probably already know of the towns of Gedney and Gedney Hills, in the Registration district of Holbeach which is 8 miles east of Spalding. The 1850 Census for Illinois includes your William Gedney Sr. 68, and Rebecca 66, plus a young girl E? age 18 in Lebanon Twp., and in St. Clair County: William Flint age 35 and Mary (Gedney) Flint 38, with their 5 children: Mary A., Edith, George, John W., James G., and George Flint age 41, probably William's older brother. There is also a William Gedney 28, and Julia 20, listed with their two children, John W., and James S. This William could be a younger brother to Mary (Gedney)Flint. These last two families are listed fairly close together on the census and both in St. Clair county. You no doubt have all this information, but one never knows. There is a William Gedney listed as purchasing two tracts of land in Illinois on August 12, 1842 and includes the land references. I would imagine you have searched the IGI for the Gedneys' listed at Cowbit, as there are a number listed. If any of this is new to you, let me know and I can fill in more of the details. Best of Luck, Debbie Notify Administrator about this message?
