Hi Jennifer - I have found lots of people with your name and the French version. Do you think your ancestors were Hugenots from France, they were protestants that were persecuted in France.

"HUGUENOTS Protestants from France began coming in earnest around 1685, and increasingly after 1688. W. Cunningham writes that around 80,000 landed in England and Ireland. Some moved to America and Germany and perhaps around 40,000 remained.30 The CRE estimates 50,000 Huguenot newcomers between 1680 and 1720.31

In 1558 the population was around 2,500,000. Between 1603-1625, it has been estimated at between 4-4.5 million, and 5,600,000 in 1630. In 1750 the population of Great Britain was probably a little over 7,000,000.32"

I have found a batch of Cauquell dating from 1583 up to 1801 in Lincolnshire - Have you considered that they changed their name ( maybe some did and some didn't change so early) and that they could have been some of the Huguenot's from France. Food for thought!! from what I understand they fled Northern France. I have the papers but they are too many to send - would u like me to post them to you? My email address is jeannaim@hotmail.com
