Hello Hilda,

The Church of England parish registers for Ashby De La Zouch have been filmed by the Latter Day Saints (LDS) back to the year 1563. Some years for these registers appear to be missing, but the years you noted for the births of your Rose and Sharpe families have been filmed.

The christening entries for Samuel Rose and Rebecca Sharpe may at least tell you the names of their fathers. If the names of their fathers are listed in the christening records, you can then search for the marriages of these fathers in the registers to see if you can determine who they had married.

Below is information showing which years the Ashby De La Zouch Church of England registers have been filmed, accompanied by the LDS film number on which the registers can be found:

To search the parish registers for Ashby De La Zouch, order LDS microfilm number 585295 from your local Family History Centre.

Concerning this film, I located the the christening indexes of five children of Samuel Rose and Rebecca (including Elizabeth), though no maiden name is provided for Rebecca in the indexes. But, I believe the Rebecca noted is Rebecca Sharpe, though I can't be sure.

As you will see, each of the indexes is sourced with LDS microfilm number 585295. In addition, you will see two christening indexes for a Samuel Wilson Rose, one for 1794 and the other for 1798. I believe the first Samuel Wilson Rose died as an infant or young child, and that Samuel and Rebecca gave another son, born in 1798, the same name.

I also found a 1793 marriage index for Samuel Rose and Rebecca Sharpe. This index however, was submitted to the LDS by a member of the LDS, but does not contain film number 0585295. The date of the marriage is provided in the index, which shows that Samuel and Elizabeth were married in the Ashby De La Zouch Church of England on 11 November 1793.

If you order microfilm number 0585295 you can check for this marriage in the Ashby De La Zouch Church of England registers.

I looked for an LDS sourced christening record for Samuel Rose born circa 1765, but did not find one, though I did find the christening index for Rebecca
Sharpe, noting that her father was William. This index with source information is below:

I also found a marriage record index for a William Sharp and Eliza Davenport. The index shows the marriage occurred in the Ashby De La Zouch Church of England on 20 April 1758. The marriage record, like the christening record for Rebecca Sharp above and the christenings for the Rose children before that, can be found on LDS microfilm number 0585295 for the Ashby De La Zouch Church of England.

The marriage index follows:

I also located other christenings for Sharp children whose father was WM, but whose mother's name is not mentioned. I believe the following were the siblings of Rebecca's, though I can't prove it. I've also included Rebecca's christening index again so that you can see the chronology of the events:

More children of William Sharp than noted above may have been born and christened in the Ashby-de-la-Zouch Church of England, as the LDS have not placed all their church indexes online.

Concerning Elizabeth Rose, daughter of Samuel Rose and Rebecca Sharpe, I found an index of her marriage to William Hallam. The index shows the marriage took place on 15 January 1818 in the Whitwick Church of England. I am not familiar with the churches in Leicestershire, but I believe this may be a different parish than St. Margaret's you mentioned in your query to the GenForum. Perhaps the marriage was recorded in both the Whitwick Parish as well as in the Parish of St. Margaret's.

I next found an 1841 census for a William and Elizabeth Hallam and six children, living in Thringstone, Civil Parish of Whitwick, Leistershire.
The census shows they were living in a place called St. George Chapelry in Thringstone.

I believe the Elizabeth in this census may refer to the Elizabeth Rose that William Hallam had married in 1818. Their oldest child William, is shown to have been born 20 years earlier, placing his birth in 1821.

Unlike future census returns, the 1841 census only notes if a person were born in or out of the county, and not the town or parish of birth.

This census was found at the Origins.net subscription website, but can also be seen on the Ancestry.com UK Collection, which is also by subscription.

The census follows:
