You may want to have someone look up the family on the 1871 Census to see who is living in the household - maybe there would be a clue there......... OR also find out who might be living in the same area/street/next door - maybe he was the son of an unwed mother living close by and the name might match one of the Charles' born in Northleach District.......... or maybe he was the son of 15 year old Mary Elizabeth Spencer and in reality is the grandson of Thomas and Jane?? On the 1881 Census "Eliza" Spencer is 24 and living in Worcester in service and there is a marriage listed on FreeBMD for Northleach for a Mary Elizabeth Spencer in December Quarter of 1881............ Jane Spencer is also in service on the 1881 Census but she is only 21 and I think much too young to have a 9 year old son which would leave only Mary Elizabeth as a possible suspect................
My own Great Grandfather was the son of an unwed mother and she was only about 16 years old when he was born so it is not impossible.......... his birth was also registered under what I assume to have been the father's name (Hartley) and not the name of what I suspect the mother's was (Potterton) - he was registrered as Albert Potterton Hartley, no father listed, mother as Ann Hartley - in reality my research seems to prove that his mother was actually Annie Potterton (about 16 years old) and I think (cannot prove) that his father was a Thomas Hartley............
