Appologies for duplication.
William, is it at all possible to trace a birth if you are unsure of a full name. I bring this up in relation to my grandfather, Charles SPENCER, who is indicated on the census as born in Gloucester, possibly the town/city not the county, but the family rumour of adoption still lingers. Is it possible to trace any and all births for a single year, in a specific town using just the first/christian name? A big task I know, but it may be the only way to track positive identification. Just where he may have been adopted from, or from which family or home is just a little too large a task.
Any thoughts on this subject?
It may have been possible to track Charles via his Army records but, as luck would have it, the records of his army service were destroyed in the Blitz. He served in South Wales Borderers during the Boer War, and a mention was found in a list of wounded, relating to a Sgt Spencer C. He is also mention on the Helles Memorial, at Gallipoli.
Again, any thoughts?
