Hi Katherine, According to the research that I done, Elizabeth's surname was Alner and not Alney. I have found very little on James Mclaren. He was born in Scotland in 1824 and his father was John Mclaren, a gardener. James married Elizabeth Jane Alner in February 1858 at Dewlish and he was a Farm Bailiff at that time.He died in February 1879 at Codford St Mary, Wiltshire. Elizabeth was baptised on the 31st March 1841 at Dewlish. Her father was John Skinner Alner b.Sept 1803 at Dewlish and he married Thomasina Anne Mitchell Jacob in Oct 1833. She was born at Milton Abbas in April 1812. They had 7 children between 1835 and 1851 including of course Elizabeth Jane. John was a blacksmith and died in August 1881. John's father was Henry Alner also born in Dewlish in March 1759. He firstly married Mary Lawrence in June 1785 and they had 4 children. Mary died in May 1799 and Henry then married Elizabeth Skinner in February 1800.They had 3 children including John - Elizabeth died in October 1809. Henry then married a third time in Sept.1824 to Martha Marsh again in Dewlish. They had no children. Henry died (not surprisingly!!) in March 1836 and Martha in 1860. There were 2 Henrys born at Dewlish in 1759 and I cannot therefore tell who his parents were - either Joseph and Mary or William and Elizabeth. I can also let you have information on Thomasina Jacob's parents if you wish. There is an excellent site called Dorset OPC and Dewlish has fantastic records in that - the Alner's go back to 1627.
