Hello Chris,

A long shot, but there is a Robert SPERLE 1791, wife Mary 1794 and children Robert, Isaac and Lucy on the 1841 census. The family also appears on the 1851 census as SPORLES. The place of birth would seem to be wrong however ... Hempnall in Norfolk. There is also a Robert SPRUEL living with his son William and family in Batacombe 1851. His place of birth is not recorded.

Certainly a selection of spellings for the surname to ponder upon!

Best wishes,

Audrey
