Hello there Kathy,
Melbury Osmond is between Yeovil and Dorchester, west of the A37. It is a village of sorts, mainly a stretched-out hamlet is a better description. I used to be a milkman there back in the mid 1990's. As for individual names, I can't remember many but the area is owned by Lady Townsend, a cousin of the Queen. Meaning that the family might have records with local names within. I've had a look on here and I have found [maybe you have also] this site...

I worked with a chap called Childs back then, and he came from Corscombe which is near Melbury Osmond.
I was born just outside of Weymouth, and went to school with a Pashen. They were farmers around that area and I think they still may be. Check the bt.com site. I see that there is a V.V Childs in Rampisham which is relatively close but of course may be a red herring. Childs was also a name from that area, and they too were farmers.
Melbury Osmond is now basically a retirement / second home area and is not likely to contain original families. Like most rural places, there were many more cottages there than now. When they started to fall apart and with the industrial revolution putting farm labourers out of a job, many landowners just let them collapse. I have found some of my family members from near Upcerne, and there is now about 6 houses there as opposed to roughly 30 plus! So I hope you have good luck!
Kind regards.
Eddie Spicer.
