John Thomas QUIN of Royal Artillery, b. Plymouth 1782

His military record shows John QUIN was born in Plymouth, Devonshire, probably January 17, 1782.

He enlisted in the Royal Artillery at Woolwich, Kent, January 17, 1793, aged eleven, for "Unlimited Service". (This date appears to be his eleventh birthday.)

He served as "Drummer & Trumpeter" 1793-98; "Gunner & Driver" 1798-1800; "Bombardier" 1800-1803; "Corporal" 1803-1807; and "Sergeant" 1803-1826. Of these thirty-three years of service, only 26 counted for his service record, because for seven of them he was under the age of 18.

In 1826, he was discharged as "being worn out", and received a pension of two shillings ha'penny per day. At this time, John's height was just one-quarter inch short of six feet--a tall man for his time.

He apparently re-enlisted (or was commanded to re-enlist) in 1835. John was "Appointed Master Gunner" at Landguard Fort (Harwich, Essex). He was again discharged, at age 65, in 1847. In the discharge document, the clerk spelled his surname QUINN.

His home in the 1840's was across the river at Walton, near Felixstowe, Suffolk.

John married Sarah CROSS (sometimes mis-transcribed CROP) March 3, 1803, Manchester Cathedral, after Banns. The military birth register shows son John QUIN born 1803, William 1806, Elizabeth 1808, Sarah 1809, David 1811, George 1813, and Charlotte 1816. I know the marriages and descendants of most of these children.

So far, I have not identified John Thomas QUIN's parentage (although I suspect he came from a military family). Nor have I found details of his wife, Sarah CROSS of Manchester, nor death dates/places of either.

Any descendants of this John Thomas QUIN (maybe from surnames HALL, HOLDING, HUGHES, or MORRISON) please contact me directly, at the e-mail shown for my name above. --Jane Elderfield
