Engel means Angelica. Engel is an old christian name for girls in Germany. Angelica is the translation into Latin.

When the last name has been "invented" Johann Braun, had been the brown haired John, Johann Mueller had been John from the mill and Johann Engel had been John the son of Engel (Angelica).

So there are a lot of Engel trees in Germany with different places of origin.

There are also jews in Mecklenburg, who have chosen Engel as last name at the beginning of the 19th century.
