My great-great-grandmother Sophia Magdalena Engel was a sister of the Rev August Engel. Sophia Magdalena married John Henry Weyer in Galveston TX about 1846. August Engel worked for a while on the Weyers' dairy farm on Galveston Island before setting out on his preaching career.

There are World Family Tree charts that trace the Engels back through Wuerttemberg in the mid 1700s. The censuses of 1850 and later show the Weyer family (sometimes spelled Weyers) on Galveston Island and they are also documented in the records of St Joseph's Catholic Church, the old German church at Galveston.

John Henry Weyer and Sophia Magdalena Engel, incidentally, had a son, Henry Weyer (Jr), a Galveston County justice of the peace who was convicted of a particularly vicious murder in 1886 in a case where he had held the inquest and rendered a verdict of suicide, soon discovered to be fraudulent. He and most of the rest of the family -- not my grandfather Joseph Patrick Weyer though, or I wouldn't be writing this -- drowned in the 1900 storm.
