I am researching my husband's grandmother, Mary Ann Impey, born abt.1878 in England, who we think was brought to Stratford, Ontario to Annie MacPherson Home for Children in 1890 as a British Home Child with 3 siblings, older sister Elizabeth who married a Mr. Stevens, older brother Alfred and younger brother William who is listed as 10 in 1890. Mary married Alfred William Hopper in early 1900's and they raised their family in Montreal.
Mary had always told her children her maiden name was Emp(e)y and that she had come "in service" with her sister, Elizabeth, when they were orphaned. My mother-in-law, before she died in 2000, had not been aware of her uncles, unless they were some of the relatives, that she spoke of from London, Ontario or the surname Baird, who lived in Surrey, BC.
I have found this group of 4 children listed as Impey in a search of Canadian archives database of HomeChildren. http://www.archives.ca/02/020110_e.html
I do not have any information on Mary's placement in Ontario, nor of the years before she married or how she ended up in Montreal.
Do any of these names ring any bells?
