Perhaps your Irish Empeys were descended from the Palatine Germans that ended up in England in the very early 1700's. From there some went to the USA. Our German ancestor's name was Johannes Ernst Emichen. How it became Empey I don't know. For the most part present day Empeys fought against the colonists in the American Revolution; many went to Canada then. Those who were not loyal to the Crown & stayed in the states then spelled their name Empie.
