Lineage of Noah Emory / Hembree Proven
By Larry Petrisky for Deborah (Emory) Lockwood
7th generation.Noah Emory (born Hembree)(1885 – 1948)
Noah Emory (Hembree) was born 19 April 1885 (source: WWI draft card & family correspondence, 1900 census has May 1885) in Cumberland or Roane County, Tennessee, and died 12 May 1948 (source: family correspondence, cemetery record) in Morgan County, Tennessee.
As an adult he appears in the 1930 census of Morgan County, Tennessee, as Noah Emory (47 b.TN); the 1920 census of Perry County, Kentucky, as “Noey Emory” (indexed as “Mary Emery”) (34 b.KY); his WWI draft card on 12 Sep 1918 entered in Perry County, Kentucky has Noah Emory (33 b.19 Apr 1885); and the 1910 census of Morgan County, Tennessee, as Noah Hembree (25 b.TN). All four records show his wife to be “Millie”.
Family correspondence says this is Millie Oody, dau of George & Isabelle Oody of Roane County, Tennessee.
As a child he appears in the 1900 census of Roane County, Tennessee as Noah Hembree (15 b. TN) the son of Henry Hembree (30, should be 36 b.TN) and Tildy (28 b.TN). Family correspondence and postings say this is William Henry Hembree and Tela or Tilda Isham, daughter ofPreston Isham of Roane County, Tennessee. 6th generation. William Henry Hembree(1864 – aft 1910)
William Henry Hembree was born 1864 in Cumberland County, Tennessee, and died after 1910.
As an adult he appears in the 1900 census of Roane County, Tennessee as Henry Hembree (30, should be 36 b.TN), father of Noah Hembree (15 b. TN).And the 1910 census of Anderson County, Tennessee as Henry Hembree (50, should be 46).
As a child he appears in the 1880 census of Cumberland County, Tennessee as Henry Hembree (16 b. TN) the son of William “W.” Hembree (47 b.TN) and Caroline (40 b.TN). Family correspondence and postings say this is William H. Hembree and his 2nd wife Caroline (not the mother of his children).
He also appears in the 1870 census of Cumberland County, Tennessee as William H. Hembree (5 b. TN) the son of William “F.” Hembree (37 b.TN) and Melvina (“Nelcina”) (38 b.TN). Family correspondence and postings say this is William H. Hembree and his 1st wife Melvina (Morgan?) -the mother of his children.
5th generation. William H. Hembree(1831 – aft 1900)
William H. Hembree was born 1831 in Roane County, Tennessee, and died after 1900.
As an adult he appears in the 1880 census of Cumberland County, Tennessee as William “W.” Hembree (47 b.TN), father of Henry Hembree (16 b. TN), and in the 1870 census of Cumberland County, Tennessee as William “F” Hembree (37 b. TN) the father of William H. Hembree (5 b.TN).
Although William Henry Hembree (b.1864) was not part of the household, William H. Hembree (27 b.TN) and wife Melvina (27 b.TN) are found in the 1860 census of Cumberland County, Tennessee. Listed next door is his brother Isaac N. Hembree(b.c.1825 TN) with wife Minerva Carter.
William H. Hembree (b.1831) and his brother Isaac N. Hembree (b.1825) are found with their widowed mother Martha Hembree (45 b. unk) in the 1850 census of Morgan County, Tennessee, as William Hembree (20 b.TN) and Isaac Hembree (15 b.TN).
Martha is known to be Anliza Martha (Patsy) Earle, Cherokee. Her race in 1860 is “not white, not black, not mulatto” and her birthplace (Cherokee Nation) is shown as “unk”.
She is the widow of Obediah Hembree (d.1849 Morgan County, Tennessee) – a fact well accepted by Hembree researchers. She, and all the children listed with her and next to her can be accounted for in the 1840 census of Morgan County, Tennessee, and the 1830 census of Roane County, Tennessee, under Obediah Hembree.
4th generation. Obediah Hembree(1790 – 1849)
Obediah Hembree was born 1790 in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, and died 29 March 1849 in Morgan County, Tennessee. He was the son of Joel Hembree (1755–1825) and Hannah Pettit (1758–1839) – a fact proven by Bob Hembree and undisputed among Hembree researchers.
3rd generation. Joel Hembree(1755 – 1825)
Joel Hembree was born 1755 in South Carolina, and died 16 Feb 1825 in Roane County, Tennessee. His wife was Hannah Pettit (b.1758 NJ d.11 Oct 1839 Roane County, Tennessee). Her father, Joshua Pettit III, fathered two Cherokee children (including Thomas Pettit of the Cherokee tribe), but she had no Native American blood in her.
Joel Hembree (1755-1825) is generally accepted as the son ofJames Hembree (b.c.1730 VA d.bef 1790 SC) and Sarah (unknown).
2nd generation. James Hembree(1730 – bef 1790)
James Hembree was born 1730 in Goochland County, Virginia, and died before 1790 inSpartanburg County, South Carolina. His wife is always shown as Sarah (Bird, usually, but proof lacking), but the 1790 widows Susannah Hembey or Hembry and Ann Hembey or Hembry look promising (the name Sarah Ann occurs in the family).
James Hembree (b.1730) is most reliably believed to be the son ofJames Hembree (b.c.1700 d.bef 1770 VA) and Sarah (unknown).
1stgeneration. James Hembree(1700 – bef 1770)
James Hembree was born c. 1700 and died before 1770 in Lunenburg County, Virginia. His wife is known to be Sarah, last name unknown. His birthplace and parents have not been established. The linkage to Henry Embry of Virginia has been thoroughly disproved. Henry Embry and his father Henry Embry and whatever uncles and brothers they had left copious business and legal records as well as wills and property deeds. There is no James Hembree or Embry to be found among them.
Notes on another Noah Emery / Hembree(b.1875 Ark)
Noah Emery is famous for shooting US Marshall James Robert Logan in the Chickasaw Nation (Oklahoma) in 1915, for which he spent 6 years in jail. (It was self defense?)
Noah Emery appears in the 1880 census of Johnson County, Arkansas; the 1900 census of Indian Territory, Choctaw Nation; the 1910 census of LeFlore County, Oklahoma; the 1920 census in the Oklahoma State Penitentiary (Pittsburg County); and the 1930 census of LeFlore County, Oklahoma.
Noah Lee Emery / Hembree was born c. 1875 in Johnson County, Arkansas. He was the son of Isaac Emery (Hembree) b.c. 1852 TN (actually IN) and Mary A. (b.c. 1855 ARK).
Isaac Emery (Hembree) (b.c.1852) is the son of John Hembree (b. 1819 Knox Co, TN d.1898 Martin Co, IN) and Martha Mathis.
John Hembree (1819-1898) is the son of Isaac Hembree (b.1797/9 SC d.1860 Martin Co, IN) and Sarah Pierce.
Isaac Hembree (1797-1860) is the son of Drury Hembree (1755-1845).
Drury Hembree (1755-1845) is the son of William Emory and Mary Grant (Cherokee).
(Note: another Isaac Emery/Hembree b.c.1854 of 1880 Fulton Co, ARK and 1860 Stone Co, MO, is the son of Harrison Hembree, grandson of Lewis F. Hembree, great grandson of Drury Hembree (1755-1845).)
