May I ask what info you found suggesting that Thomas Emms came over on the Abysinnia? From any family records or family stories handed down? I have not yet found Thomas' crossing and ask if you would share any insight you may have. I began research at the beginning of 2006 on the Emms family in Morris Run, PA. I have some information on this line. While searching files at the Tioga County Historical Society, I found no records on Thomas Emms family, so that is currently a dead end. A census check for Herbert Emms shows him in in the 1880 census, age 3, born in the US. Thomas appears to have come over alone and then was followed by his wife and two daughters. However, two other daughters born in England appear to have passed away prior to their leaving England. Please remember that those who enumerated the census as well as those transcribing the hand-written documents do make errors. Thomas' family in 1880 federal census, Tioga County, Pennsylvania follows (name misspelled as Emmis rather than Emms) 1880 US census for Hamilton township, Tioga Co, PA: June 3, 1888, page 11, Supervisore Dist # 6, Enumeration Dist # 155, (county sheet # 227) - Living at House # 66 ___ Street? (street listed as "Jones District"), Lines 10-17, family 80/80 Thomas Emmis, age 33, miner, born England Sarahann Emmis, age 36, born England Clara Emmis, age 18, born England Emmia Emmis, age 15, born England Lottie Emmis, age 7, born Penna (Charlotte?) Florence P. Emmis, age 6, born Penna (Phoebe?) Herbert Charles Emmis, age 3, born Penna William A Emmis, age 9/12, born Sept, born Penna * William A "Emmis" is William Aston Emms. [there was also a son Walter Emms born after this census] The 1871 English census lists: Address: 1 George Street, Village of Woodsetton, Civil Parish of Sedgley, in Staffordshire, England (Pages 8 and 9) Sarah Ann Frost Emms was born in Tipton, Staffordshire, England about 1843. Her children: Ann Eliza Emms was born about 1870 in Sedgley, Staffordshire Clara B Emms was born about 1862 in Sedgley, Staffordshire (*in PA 1880 Census) Emily B Emms was born about 1865 in Tipton, Staffordshire (*in PA 1880 Census) Mary A Emms was born about 1869 in Sedgley, Staffordshire The above mother and 4 daughters are living in the Thomas Frost household (see page 8) Sarah Ann Emms' father: Thomas Frost born about 1822 in Tipton Sarah Ann's Mother: Phoebe Frost born about 1825 in Tipton Sarah Ann's Sisters: Rebecca was born about 1859 in Sedgley Mary Ann was born about 1852 in Tipton Sarah Ann's Brothers: Edward was born about 1867 in Sedgley John was born about 1849 in Tipton Samuel was born about 1857 in Tipton Thomas was born about 1856 in Tipton Clara and Emma (Emily) appear to be the only English-born children surviving in 1880 Pennsylvania, where Thomas worked as a coal miner. Both have the middle initial "B" in the UK census for 1871, but that initial is missing in the Pennsylvania records, a fact which lead to further research. There is no record of a marriage between Sarah Ann Frost and Thomas Emms. However, there is a marriage between Sarah Ann Frost and William Brothwood and a later marriage between Sarah Brothwood and Thomas Emms. With much thanks to Estelle Pymm, who ordered and paid for the certified marriage record this spring, we now know that Sarah Ann Brothwood was a widow when she married Thomas Emms, and that her father was Thomas Frost. For a copy of that record, you will need to contact Estelle Emms Pymm, who manages an Emms Family website. Thomas E. Emms was a missing link in the UK Emms family. Our joint research has brought our Emms family in the US into its proper place in the UK Emms family. Birth record in England for Sarah Ann Emms, nee Frost: Vol 18, page 292, Sarah Frost, born 1846 Apr-May-June, Dudley. Birth record for: Ann Eliza Emms, birth 1870 Oct-Nov-Dec, Dudley, Staffordshire. Death records in England for two Emms daughters who had been listed in the above 1871 census are as follows: Vol 6c, page 64: Mary Asia Emms, born ~1869, Death Register 1872 Jan-Feb-Mar, Dudley, Staffordshire. Vol 6c, page 47: Eliza Emms, born ~1870, Death Register 1871 Oct-Nov-Dec, Dudley, Staffordshire. The daughters who came to America with Sarah Ann appear to be (my supposition until I can get the vital records on these two) her children with her first husband, William Brothwood, thus the "B" middle initial in the 1871 census. Thomas and Sarah Ann Emms' son William Aston Emms was also a coal miner in Morris Run and died at about the age of 42, but no death records for Thomas or son William Aston Emms are listed in Tioga County, PA. This was a coal-mining town run by the coal company - not all notifications of birth, marriage, or death were turned over to the county prior to the legal requirements. There are Orphans Court and Probate records available in Wellsboro, Tioga County, PA, for Herbert Emms, widow Eliza Emms, and for Herbert's mother - widow Sarah Ann Emms. US Citizenship records: EMMS, Thomas E,; age 29; born in England; arrived at New York in May 1872; settled in Morris Run; renounced the Queen of Great Britain; declaration made 20 July 1877. (I have copy of this record from Wellsboro, PA. - see naturalization records at Joyce Tice's Tri-Counties Genealogy: http://www.rootsweb.com/~srgp/aliens/alienef.htm) I see that Thomas Emms, born in Tipton, Sedgley, was listed in 1871 UK Census in the Military Barracks at District 6, Sunderland (East Sunderland), Durham. William Aston Emms' son Roy Thomas Emms always said that his grandfather Thomas Emms was a cook in the British military. In the US, though Thomas worked in the mines during the work week, and on Sundays (according to family stories passed down) he served as cook for the superintendent of the mines in Morris Run. Thomas and Sarah Ann's daughter Clara also worked as a servant for the superintendent - though she was listed as "Clarice" when enumerated in that household in 1880...she was listed in Thomas' household as Clara age 18, and in the Nearing household as Clarice age 17. Correctness of details all depends on who is giving the information to the enumerator. You should contact Estelle Emms Pymm for Uk information. Her Emms family history website for the family of Thomas and Eliza Aston Emms is: http://pages.britishlibrary.net/mikepymm/edward_&_sarah.htm Has this been of any help to you? - Joyce Notify Administrator about this message?
