I have a theory that this Elijah Emmons is the brother of my Sarah Jane Emmons.I have no concrete proof that her name was Emmons.I only have a Bible entry from her grandaughter who says her mother Nancy Louise Trantham was the daughter of Thomas Trantham and Sarah Jane Emmons.
In 1830 p 412 Maury TN
Zachariah Trantham and family (60-70) age fits for father of Thomas Trantham
3 homes
Elijah Emmans and family (30-40) fits for brother of Sarah Jane
3 homes
Thomas Trantham and family *(20-30) my ggg grandfather*
John S Trantham and family 20-30 fits for brother of Thomas
In 1820 I did find who I think is Elijah p 133 Williamsport Maury TN (this is close to current Hickman and Lewis lines) but didn't find the Tranthams
By 1840 Thomas Trantham and family are in Hickman TN in 1850 in Lewis TN and in 1860 they are in Texas Co MO but the farm was in Oregon Co MO.
1840 Zachariah Trantham is still living and in Hardin TN- just North of Tishomingo MS where Elijah Emmons has moved.
Sarah Jane was dead by 1860 so the only census to give her birth was 1850 and she says she was born in SC around 1796.I have a few reasons why I think Elijah was her brother other than their proximity in 1840.I know there was a MS connection because several times Nancy Louise (daughter of Sarah Jane) indicates her mother was born in MS.Even though I don't think it's correct it is a clue. The name Elijah is heavily used in Sarah Janes family. She names a son Elijah and many of her grandchildren carried on the name.(Another odd name is used repeatedly in the family- Hansford/Hanford???)
Also the Maury TN marriages have no record of Sarah Jane and Thomas Trantham but they do have Elijah's.You'll have to be creative but it has been transcribed as-
Elijah Ennis to Darky Trauthan 9/30/1816
You can see how the m's were read as n's (Emmis) and her name (Trantham) the u was really an n and the n an m.I think she must have been Thomas' sister. So we have a brother and sister who married a sister and brother.
Also on the 1850 I read it as Darcy but might have been influenced by the Darky- but it's some variation of that.
It looks like she's died by the 1860 census because clearly Tabitha can't be the former wife because of the age difference.
I would love to share any info about this family.
