Hi Bonnie,
No, I live in Australia, but my mother was an Emmott from Colne and I have been back to visit regularly.I don't think Emmett or Emmott (just phonetic differences, I believe)is very common.According to Whittaker, a famous 18th century Lancashire historian, Emmott is early Saxon for Ea-Mut, or mouth of the water. He goes on to state that he believes an Emmott was instrumental in bringing together two local warring tribes and that they probably met at a spring to agree on a treaty or peace agreement; and because of this bringing together at a spring or similar he was from that time on called Ea-Mut, or, mouth of the water.I cannot vouch for the accuracy of his information or opinion.I got this information from a book quoting Whittaker and written in 1878 called 'Annals of Colne, by James Carr'.certainly there were Emmotts around the town when Doomsday was collected as it shows them registered as being farmers in the area.Emmott Hall was a huge Manor House that was probably built in the late 1600's and was demolished in 1956, but even this structure was built upon an earlier one dating back to around 1310.I have a painting of it and some old photos and it was a massive but lovely rambling old place that was sadly destroyed by the local council in whose hands it had been placed for safe keeping.I think that I may also be related to some Whittakers in the town as well.I will ask my father, although he is suffering from dementia and his memory is pretty patchy. There was an ironmongers shop in the middle of the town that had been operating since the late 19th Century I think, Called Willie Whittakers.Sadly, I think it closed down in the last two or three years.
The local paper is called the 'Colne Times' and they are usually very receptive of letters asking assistance. There used to be a thriving local historical society as well but I don't have a contact.Perhaps you could address a letter care of the local library as that seems to be a centre for local history enthusiasts.
Hope this helps.
Cheers
David Senior
