Emigration from Canada to US in 1861

I'm researching ancestors who emigrated from Canada to the US in about 1861. They settled in the Erie, PA area but I'm not sure where they were coming from. Family history has them from either Hamilton, Ontario or from Dundee, Quebec. It's my understanding that there were no legal requirements to cross boarders back then so no records were kept. Would anyone be able to direct me as to where they may have crossed? Not even sure if there were designated boarder crossings back in 1861. Thank you.
