I am assuming you took the arrival date from the information in the Indiana State Digital Archives which also gives his naturalization date as 12 Oct 1858. Is the arrival date from the online transcription, or have you seen the actual document?
I ask this because the information on the transcription would seem to be at odds with the laws existing at the time. As far as I know, there were 3 temporal requirements for naturalization in that timeframe:
- a minumum of 5 years since arrival in the US
- one year residency in the state
- a minimum of 3 years from filing declarartion on intent.
There were a few exceptions that provided for expedited naturalizations, but they applied to those serving in the military or those who entered the country as minors.
Additionally, Using the NY passenger arrival database at Ancestry.com I could find no trace of your man on any ship arriving in NY during 1857.
