Ellis Island & Name Change - Please Help

Hello everyone,

I'm so new to this area of research that I'm not sure what to do.

Do anyone have any suggestions to help find the names of ancestors prior to Ellis Island?

I have been told, they changed their name as soon as they hit Ellis Island. So far I have not been able to find them in the Ellis Island records. The 1920 census shows the family came over in 1912 and they were all born in Russia and were Jewish

Some of the names

Castleman, Alfred b. 23 Nov 1885 - Russia
+ Wife (unknown surname) Rebecca b. 30 Jun 1889 - Russia

Mother of Rebecca

Shapiro, Bertha b. about 1864 Russia
+ Morris Shapiro (believed to be 3rd husband) b. 1858

Some of the chilren of Morris and Bertha (I believe)

i. Shapiro, George b. abt 1902
ii. , Gilbert b . abt 1906
iii. , Fanny b. abt 1910

iiii. Eva married a Deskin, not sure if she was a Shapiro
V. Rose married a Fisher not sure if she was a Shapiro

Any advice on how to research or find them coming over would be greatly appreciated,

Lydia
